UC San Diego alumnus Ross Tate (Ph.D. ’12), now a computer-science professor at Cornell, will receive the Dahl-Nygaard Prize in 2017 for “fundamental contributions to type systems with applications to object-oriented languages.”

A team led by WHOI oceanographers Viviane Menezes and Alison Macdonald and Scripps researcher Courtney Schatzman report that Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) has freshened (become less saline) at a surprising rate between 2007 and 2016—a shift that could alter ocean circulation and ultimately contribute to rising sea levels.

In a new paper published this week in PNAS, researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center, in collaboration with colleagues at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, the University of Colorado School of Medicine and SignalRx, a San Diego-based biopharmaceutical company, describe a potential new class of anti-cancer drugs that inhibit two or more molecular targets at once, maximizing therapeutic efficiency and safety.

As the United States prepares for a future under the leadership of President Donald Trump, The Global Forum at International House provided a space for community discourse that examined what we know—and what we don’t know—about the new presidency. Addressing that uncertainty was a diverse group of experts from the humanities and social sciences, just days before the inauguration.

In the coming months, UC San Diego students and audiences will have the chance to see dance troupes from Korea and Israel, musicians from Colombia and France, films from Japan and Spain and a dynamic selection of performing artists from throughout the U.S. It’s the 13th season of ArtPower at UC San Diego, and the organization is putting its heart into bringing together diverse performers and audiences.

Wael Al-Delaimy grew up in Iraq, where he trained to become a medical doctor and epidemiologist. He worked in Jordan, studied in New Zealand and at Harvard University, joined the International Agency for Research in Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) and eventually arrived in 2003 at UC San Diego, where he is now professor and chief of the Division of Global Health in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine.

Clapping is optional, but it may be difficult to resist. That’s what gospel music is intended to do—get you swaying, tapping your feet and joining in the joyful harmony. On Sunday, Jan. 29, UC San Diego will host the 21st annual Lytle Scholarship Concert, featuring the UC San Diego Gospel Choir with special guests Archie Robinson and New Birth Praise. All proceeds from the event, titled “Yet Still I Rise,” will support undergraduate scholarships.

Imagine a place at UC San Diego where slides twist and turn around Torrey Pine trees, and suspension bridges tower over waterfalls. That is the design created by a team of UC San Diego engineering students competing in the 2017 Walt Disney Imagineering Imaginations Design Competition.
