The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has selected two UC San Diego faculty for Sloan Research Fellowships in 2016. This year’s recipients at UC San Diego are Charles Sprenger, associate professor of economics and strategy, Rady School of Management and the Department of Economics, and Julio Barreiro, assistant professor of physics, Department of Physics.

New findings by researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that not only is rehabilitation vital but that a longer, even more intense period of rehabilitation may produce even greater benefit.

New research finds there is a distinct sound coming from a massive community of fish, shrimp, jellies, and squid as they travel up and down from the depths of the ocean to the water’s surface to feed. This sound could be serving as a “dinner bell” for these deep-water organisms that play a key role in ocean food webs and the global carbon cycle, and could help scientists better understand this mysterious ecosystem, according to new research presented this week at the 2016 Ocean Science Meeting in New Orleans.

Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered that HIV infection of human immune cells triggers a massive increase in methylation, a chemical modification, to both human and viral RNA, aiding replication of the virus. The study, published February 22, 2016 in Nature Microbiology, identifies a new mechanism for controlling HIV replication and its interaction with the host immune system.

As men age, their testosterone levels decrease, but prior studies of the effects of administering supplements of the hormone to older men have been inconclusive. Now, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and 12 other medical centers in the United States have shown that testosterone treatment for men over the age of 65 improves sexual function, walking ability and mood.

Google has announced two new Google Faculty Research Awards to CSE alumni and one to CSE Prof. Ravi Ramamoorthi in the Jacobs School of Engineering of the University of California, San Diego. It is Ramamoorthi's second such award, after receiving one in 2014 while he was still at UC Berkeley (just months before he joined the CSE faculty at UC San Diego). In 2015 CSE Prof. Steven Swanson was the sole recipient at UC San Diego of the Faculty Research Award.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego Distinguished Professor William Gerwick received the American Society of Pharmacognosy’s Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to natural products research. Gerwick will accept the award during the Society’s annual meeting in July at the 2016 Joint Natural Products Conference in Copenhagen.
