UCSD Alumni Calls for Nominations for Outstanding Alumni

UCSD Alumni is now accepting nominations for the 36th Annual Alumni Celebration recognizing the accomplishments of outstanding alumni. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 25, 2013. Alumni from the University of California, San Diego may be nominated for the following recognitions:

Outstanding Alumnus

Awarded to an alumna or alumnus of an undergraduate or graduate program of UC San Diego who has rendered special or outstanding service, or, through personal achievement, has brought honor and distinction to the University.

Distinguished Leadership

Awarded to an alumna or alumnus of an undergraduate or graduate program of UC San Diego whose dedication and volunteer commitment has significantly enriched the University.

Emerging Leader

Presented to an alumna or alumnus who has made a significant impact on their profession and/or community-at-large since graduation. The nominee must be 35 years of age or younger at the time the award is presented.

These prestigious annual awards honoring the best of UC San Diego will be presented Saturday, June 7, 2014, as part of the Alumni Weekend festivities. Proceeds from the Alumni Celebration will benefit UC San Diego student scholarships.

Recognized for their leadership, advocacy, philanthropy and service to UC San Diego, the 2013 honorees included:

  • Kurt Campbell, Muir ’80, Outstanding Alumnus
    Former assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
  • Leo Spiegel, Revelle ’83, Distinguished Leadership
    A managing partner at Mission Ventures, a Southern California venture capital firm that invests in early stage IT companies.
  • James Rohr, M.S. ’80, Ph.D. ’85, Distinguished Service
    A research scientist at SPAWAR Systems Center, and a lecturer at UC San Diego.
  • Kelly Kovacic, Marshall ’00, Emerging Leader
    A former teacher at the Preuss School UCSD, the 2009-2010 California Teacher of the Year, and one of four finalists for the National Teacher of the Year.
