The U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges guidebook ranks the University of California San Diego the nation’s 9th best public university, up one spot, compared to last year. For more than a decade, the publication has included UC San Diego in its list of the nation’s top 10 public universities.

The rankings are based on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduate rate performance and alumni giving.

In addition, U.S. News names the campus's Jacobs School of Engineering the 12th best public engineering school among engineering colleges that offer doctorates.

In the guidebook’s “high school counselors’ top college picks,” UC San Diego was the 11th best public university, which is based on academic advisers’ impressions of the quality of undergraduate education at each institution.

“It’s is an honor to continue to be recognized for providing a world-class education and exceptional student experience,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “As one of the nation’s top public research universities, UC San Diego thrives on a culture of collaboration that sparks discoveries to benefit humankind. We are dedicated to ensuring our students have the opportunity to become changemakers, equipped with the multidisciplinary skills needed to accelerate answers to our world’s most pressing issues.”

Producing cutting-edge research is one of the ways UC San Diego is a top ten public university. For example, the UC San Diego Design Lab recently launched a city-wide initiative that seeks to harness the power of crowdsourcing to address transportation and congestion issues in San Diego. In addition, bioengineers on campus recently have developed a new blood test that could detect cancer — and locate where in the body the tumor is growing. The research provides a way to diagnose cancer early on without having to do invasive surgical procedures like biopsies.

The U.S. News and World Report 2018 Best Colleges guidebook profiles 1,600 schools.

UC San Diego consistently performs well in a variety of national and international rankings including additional lists from U.S. News which named the school the 15th best university in its world rankings. In addition, the U.S. News Best Graduate Schools guidebook named the Jacobs School of Engineering and UC San Diego School of Medicine, 13th and 18th, respectively.

The university’s efforts in social innovation and education were also recently recognized with an official Changemaker Campus designation from Ashoka U, the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs.
