Celebrating UC San Diego Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni April 7

We work Hollywood red carpets, Congressional chambers and Mongolian mountains. We share innovative therapies, music, art and sports around the world. With patience, persistence and perseverance, we pursue our passions relentlessly. We have success in common. We are UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and alumni. We are Tritons.

“There’s a unique opportunity in this particular school’s history because it isn’t like Harvard or the University of Chicago where the history of the school is so clear, and the attitude of the school is so clear,” said actor Dileep Rao, ’95. “We have a chance through giving back to and speaking about our university to offer it a kind of identity…a chance for us to say this is what matters, this is what counts for UC San Diego.”

It is our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community friends that make UC San Diego a top-ranked public university. You are invited to celebrate what it means to be a Triton at the first-ever Triton Day Experience April 7, a combination of Admit Day and Open House featuring education and entertainment with fun for all ages. You can even share your Triton pride by recording your own video at the Triton Vision booth.

As members of the campus community, we make discoveries, build traditions and shape our university’s future. Following is just a sampling of individuals who are proud to be Tritons … like you.

Dileep Rao, ’95, has starred in movies like “Avatar” and “Inception.” Would it surprise you to know that Rao started his career while studying to be a medical student at UC San Diego? He got the acting bug right here, taking classes in our world-class department of theatre and dance.

Valerie A. Ramey, Ph.D., chair of the economics department in the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego and an affiliate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, was honored by the Chancellor’s Associates in 2008 for excellence in undergraduate teaching. Her research interests include long-run trends in time use and the effects of government spending on the economy.

Albert Yu-Min Lin, ’04, M.S. ’05, Ph.D ’08, is a research scientist and engineer at UC San Diego and a National Geographic Explorer. The environment at UC San Diego fueled Lin’s passion for research and exploration, and inspired him to combine the two into an adventurous research project in Mongolia.

Scott Paulson is the outreach coordinator for the UC San Diego Arts Library and an award-winning soundscape artist. He is the University Carillonneur, performing live on Geisel’s rooftop chimes (and yes, he takes song requests!). Paulson also has his own performance ensemble, the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra.

Elizabeth Seckel, ’12, came to UC San Diego because she was inspired by professor V.S. Ramachandran’s innovative therapies and research. Last year, Seckel took part in the Clinton Global Initiative University and developed a project to bring Ramachandran’s mirror box therapy for phantom limb pain to patients in Haiti.

Iman Sadeghi, M.S. ’08, Ph.D.’11, is a Google Software Engineer. He grew up in Iran and came to UC San Diego to pursue graduate work in engineering. While a student here, he interned at Walt Disney’s Animation Studios and Pixar, and he is credited with rendering the hair that was featured in the Walt Disney Film, “Tangled.”

At the Triton Day Experience, you’re invited to get an insider's look at UC San Diego—you’ll have the opportunity to check out the latest sustainable vehicles, step inside the studios of our visual arts graduate students, witness cutting-edge research, learn about college planning and listen to live music—all in one place, at one time.

We also encourage you to connect with the Triton community on social media: “Like” us on Facebook and take part in weekly Triton Challenges, or follow us on Twitter and tell us what makes you a Triton (use #ImATriton). Tell us your story and you could be one of our next featured Tritons!

Get involved with the Triton Day Experience! Complete details, including times, maps, directions and parking, at tritonday.ucsd.edu/experience.
