Slideshow Description
It was a fundraiser like no other, with surfboards instead of tuxedos and flip flops in place of ballgowns. The local community came together on Aug. 27 to celebrate UC San Diego’s 30th annual Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational and raise funds to fight cancer. Since its establishment three decades ago, the event has raised more than $11 million for Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.
On the sunny summer day, surfers, community members, scientists, physcians and patients came together near Scripps Pier for a friendly surfing competition followed by a traditional Hawaiian luau, complete with Polynesian dance performances. Funds raised will support the delivery of compassionate clinical care, inspired education and leading-edge research that ultimately benefits individuals living with cancer.
