Joan Klein Jacobs, a dedicated and visionary philanthropist, civic leader and patron of the arts died on May 6. She was 91. Jacobs left a legacy of vast positive impact on UC San Diego, the region and around the globe. Together with her husband, Irwin, Jacobs’ philanthropic support spanned the entirety of the UC San Diego campus—from health and medicine, to arts and culture, to technology and global transformation. A group of researchers at the School of Medicine led an investigation that offers new insight into the causes of spina bifida, the most common structural disorder of the human nervous system. The study has revealed the first link between spina bifida and a common chromosomal microdeletion in humans. It also underscores the potential role of folic acid in reducing the risk of the disorder.
