Researchers at UC San Diego have received a $25.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and National Institute on Aging to continue the Study of Latinos-Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging, a 12-year assessment of cognitive and brain aging and impairment among aging Latinos.

Obesity is a major public health issue among Latinos, and a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. But in a new study, researchers at UC San Diego report that cardiometabolic abnormalities, such as hypertension, are more strongly associated with cognitive decline than obesity alone.

The National Institute on Aging has awarded scientists at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and San Diego State University with a five-year, $4 million grant to boost the number of Latino and other underrepresented minority researchers studying Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias afflicting seniors of Latino origins, a demographic historically overlooked.
