The University of California San Diego earned the title of No. 1 best public college for research in the nation in a new ranking released by Washington Monthly. America’s Best Colleges for Research, included in Washington Monthly’s 2025 College Guide and Rankings, highlights the fundamental role research universities play in driving economic growth and human flourishing. UC San Diego also ranked No. 6 among all research universities nationwide.

“This prestigious recognition reinforces UC San Diego’s reputation as a global hub where the world’s brightest minds and most promising talent converge with cutting-edge resources and support to drive groundbreaking discoveries,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “As an institution dedicated to serving the public good, we remain steadfast in our commitment to improving lives, broadening human understanding and potential, and fostering a more secure world for generations to come.”

In the only ranking of its kind published by a journalistic outlet, Washington Monthly’s Best Colleges for Research rated a subset of 139 universities that each spent at least $100 million annually on research. The ranking is based on four equally weighted indicators: total research spending, science and engineering PhDs awarded, faculty receiving major national awards, and the share of faculty elected to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

In its full methodology, Washington Monthly notes the importance of illuminating the benefits that America’s research universities bring to the country at large at a time when federal funding remains uncertain. In a similar effort, UC San Diego launched its Behind Every Breakthrough campaign earlier this year to communicate the impact of the university’s research on peoples’ day-to-day lives and what is at risk if federal funding is cut.

From making breakthroughs in medicine to protecting our planet and creating innovations that support economic growth, UC San Diego researchers are powering a safer, stronger nation every day. And despite federal funding delays, the university secured $1.7 billion in grants in fiscal year 2025 to fuel critical research in human health, national defense, advanced technology, social sciences and more.

At UC San Diego, doctoral scholars participate in rigorous academics and collaborate alongside distinguished faculty to advance scientific discovery. Just this year, the Jacobs School of Engineering was named the 10th best engineering school in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 Best Graduate Schools report; the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health celebrated five years of tackling public health challenges; and the university launched the new School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences to meet the critical demand for AI and data science education and innovation.

Recently, UC San Diego placed No. 4 among U.S. public universities, No. 15 among all U.S. universities and 20th globally in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy — one of the most respected global measures of research universities. UC San Diego was also recognized among the world’s top 10 universities in the Clarivate Top 50 Universities Powering Global Innovation report, which evaluates universities’ influence on innovation through research and patent activity.
