Steven M. Strauss and Lise N. Wilson have gifted $3.25 million to UC San Diego Health Sciences to open a new research center geared toward creating novel treatment options that will slow or halt the progression of heart disease.

UC San Diego named John M. Carethers as the vice chancellor for Health Sciences, effective January 1, 2023. Carethers will report directly to the chancellor and is part of the leadership team. He replaces David A. Brenner as vice chancellor for Health Sciences, who stepped down on July 1, 2022.

On October 29, 2018, the Cardiovascular Institute at UC San Diego Health performed its 50th heart transplant of the year. The patient, 52-year-old Nate Jackson, will spend Thanksgiving with family, friends and a new heart.
